Purpose: Nurses who wish to work in the surgical department need to realize that there are several special areas related to surgeries. There are a lot of variables to consider working in this highly technically profession. Working within this specialized environment professional need to be aware of patient safety needs, surgeon and anesthesiologist objectives are met, and the rest of the surgical team has the necessary supplies and equipment to complete a successful procedure. The scavenger assignment will introduce the learner to the location of supplies and equipment. In addition the nurse will learn the surgical terminology, rational for use, and how to use the equipment according to manufacture suggestions.
Objective : Introduction to perioperative nursing
Procedures: There are several steps necessary to learn and understand the usage of the surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies. The learner will identify their preceptor and with their supervision they go through the supplies.
Procedural steps:
1. Learn the supplies, equipment, and instruments from the lecturer
2. Scavenger hunt for listed items according surgical procedure
3. Work with preceptor to understand these items and proper usage
4. Discuss with other learners what they have learned and
5. Return scavenger list to lecturer with explanation of equipment usages
Tools: Learner will have the lecturer on line and face to face interaction of learning the supplies. They will use the scavenger hunt from the google.doc (which I have to develop). The learner will need to locate the supplies, equipment, and supplies and work from there. They will have to add the explanation of the supplies used and what they are needed for. There will be skype office hours to help with the learning process and additional questions that could potential arise.
TimeLine: This is a six month project, because the length of learning supplies, equipment, and instruments can be very time consuming. It is important the learner truly understands the concepts of the supplies related to surgical needs.
Rubric: Points are calculated according to each speciality, such as general, orthopedic, urology, or ENT surgery. So each sub-speciality is worth a total of 50 points
0-20 points learner is unable to identify supplies or equipment related to subspeciality
21-30 points learner is able to identify some supplies/equipment related to subspecility
31-40 points learner is able to identify supplies/equipment and purpose of use
41-50 points learner is able to identify correctly supplies/equipment and purpose of usage.
