AWolf - Loved this unit too! This was an exciting unit to do. I created an audio podcast using Audacity and uploaded it into my CS-110 course. The audio is an class orientation that students can actively go thru the course as I am talking them thru it. The feedback from my students was great. They loved it. Many stated they wished they had it when they started my class and that it would be very helpful to future students. The software is free so anyone can provide audios in their online courses!

In this entry I want to summarize my experiences with my tools. I began this unit using two tools. Audacity and viddler. Later I used Animoto and ScreencastOMatic. I have a really good time with this course and see the wonderful opportunities that we have to support and deliver our content. Why did I choose these tools? I chose based upon my students need and accessibility. My choices are not based on which are the easy ones. The tools that I chose were very simple to use. Most of them I just have to study the directions and practice. In my opinion the learning curve is not long. It is matter of time. How much time do I spend practicing? I used these tools to support my learning objectives in my class:

A. Designing a research proposal: I supported the content “elements of a research proposal” that students have to understand in order to design their research proposal.

B. My multicultural education class: I support some concepts study in class and also I gave feedback about their final multicultural education project.

The challenges for me were especially time. But the best I have learned in this class is to foster my epistemological curiosity. This means to try out, experience without fear. After I have seen these tools I am not able any longer to use just the traditional text written form for delivering my online education. I must incorporate the tools that I have learned into my online teaching. I overcome the few difficulties by practicing the tool. I am going back to Costa Rica and I will have more time to practice other tools that I have seen in this class, but I did not try because of time.

Well, I decided to create my content using Adobe Photoshop. I wanted to create something that could be used with a wide range of ages and can also appeal to the second language learner. I created a collage using a variety of pictures representing major events in NM’s history dating back to before the 1600s to its present. Even though I’m just a beginner using the program, I always have fun playing around editing pictures. The only problem I had using Photoshop is that it can be very time consuming. The program offers many tools to use, but they can be overwhelming to the beginner. To expand my learning audience, I would have to use other tools like a video or slide show maker that offers sound. People who are comfortable using the tools Photoshop has to offer can make some awesome visual displays. As for content creation, Photoshop has limitations because it is just an imaging-editing tool.

I decided to use Animoto for my Content Creation. I must say it was easier than I thought. The hardest part was finding the pictures I wanted to use. Thanks to Frans suggestion to put all the pictures you want to use into one folder and then upload them did make it much easier. I hope the little tidbits about some of the content for the semester will be inviting to the students. The link to my Anamoto is below. Once you get to the video enjoy. I would recommend this tool to anyone that wants to add a short video to invite their class to a new unit or whatever.

The tools I selected are Animoto and Screencast-o-Matic. Both were very user friendly. Once I located the photos I wanted to use for Animoto and saved them to my files, it was easy to upload them to the program. Selecting the music took a little more time because I listened to most of the selection before deciding which one to use. I changed the music about three times before the final video was produced.

Screencast is so easy to use. I like the feature that one can edit the recording without having to start at the beginning. Just slide the cursor to the minute or second to be deleted and start recording. After recording; it can be previewed before finalizing. If there is no editing or no additional recording to be done, click upload to finalize. The software also encodes the recording and provides a URL.

The computer screen froze at 90% of the encoding process. I had to end the task through Windows Task Manager. I thought I might loose the entire session. After logging back into Screencast-o-Matic the encoding process started automatically. There was no need to record the session again. This tool is very beneficial for e-learning. It is so easy to capture the computer screen and use it to explain or demonstrate a procedure. Once the session is recorded students may view it anytime. It is like an overhead or chalkboard. The only drawback is that only a maximum of 15 minutes are allowed.

The content of the screencast is an explanation of a marketing case analysis assignment providing students with more in depth detail of what is required along with some hints to complete the analysis. The video highlights some of the products developed by the company analyzed.

I decided to try Screen-O-Matic for a presentation. The site is very user friendly and the instructions for creating a presentation and uploading was very helpful. I didn’t encounter any techno problems, surprising since I am using Vista and Vista does not like to play well with a lot of programs! The only problems I did encounter were background noise. Every time I would start to record the phone would ring or the dogs would bark. Finally after four or five times, I booted everyone out of the house and turned the phone off. No more interruptions. The only other problem I had was keeping with in the time frame. The presentations can only by 15 minutes or less, and I went over a few times. I needed to cut down on some of the tools I wanted to discuss. I think this would be a great tool to use in my course, as it allows me to show the students exactly how to perform a task in Adobe Indesign. I am most certainly keeping this tool.

I experimented with the Animoto website. The site provides sample short videos which are quite impressive. It is a free download for a 30-second video using around 15 photos. It, too, is easy as 1-2-3. You have the opportunity to review your creation and move around the pictures or text. The site saves all of your videos even if you delete them. So, this can be quite confusing. You also can email your creation to a friend, email it to yourself, download to your ipod, or copy the html and paste it into your class. So, here is mine...

Fellow classmates,

Well here is one of the last assignments for this course.  I thought content creation would have been a lot of fun, but I was wrong.  I wanted to do a tool that no one had chose, well I found out by using ms producer it was not very easy.  There were a lot of incompablities with windows vista.  Does anyone use ms producer?  I put my text slides then my still images in the ms producer but I could only get one of the two come across in the weblink.  So with that thought in mind I just change by tool, I picked photostory 3.

I found photostory 3 was easy to download from microsoft, easy to use, and compability with windows media player.  The tool pretty much walked you through the design and lay out of the content.  It was great and a lot of fun to complete.   Although when I up loaded it to the wiki site the music was lost and my volume became hard to hear.  I tried many different things to change this issue but was unable to do.

Well I recommend photostory for people who want to send a lot of pictures to the someone using window media player.  I do not recommend ms producer unless you are using an older verison of windows.

FInal thought you will be able to see my content creation on the assignment site, please go there if you would like to view it.

The tool I tried to work with was Moviemaker but it didn’t work so I zeroed in on Photo Story 3.  It worked like a charm. It was easy to use, quick to learn, and of course – free. This was the first time I incorporated music into a project – it worked out great.  I used this tool for an audio-visual lesson on female gang members that is an off-shoot of Youth Gangs.

When I checked out the link to be sure it works, the audio was faint so a set of earphones may be needed.

I initially chose a tool called Speechi to construct this content.  Unfortunately there were more difficulties than I wanted to deal with at this point.  I think it may be a useful tool, BUT I don’t want to spend the $495 to find out when the $free doesn’t perform too well.

So… I chose to use the new web presentation/collaboration tool that I discovered – called vyew.  [link = http://vyew.com].  It is amazingly easy to upload content – pics, ppt, pdf, and more – and then either (a) “have a meeting” with that content or (2) give others access thru your LCMS and let them “learn”, or (3) use the tool and your content for collaboration.  Right now it doesn’t save audio for your content, but that’s coming soon.

The most difficult part is just practicing – load something, work with it, delete it, and then try again.  The Home Page wants to promote it as a 1-2-3 tool.  It is – BUT only if you put some practice time into it

The lesson content I created is posted on my Moodle course. It is in Unit 1 – Lesson 4 and is called “Metabolism and Energy”.  Click it and “whoosh”.

I generated a conceptual introduction to queueing system behavior in PowerPoint, using MatLab and MS Excel to generate graphics. The result is a ten page graphic novel. In addition, the package includes a simple simulation of a queueing system using MS Excel. I had planned to use MatLab for this initial simulation, but decided to use an Excel version I wrote some time ago so that more people will be able to play with it.

The intro and simulation are in my IE 522 demo course. This is under construction, but you can get the intro and demo by clicking on the IE 522 course work icon, then clicking on the Exercises icon, or clicking on the Exercises icon on the course menu. The intro and demo are the last entries under Lecture 1. If you haven't been to this site, let me know your NMSU account name and I'll add you to the student list. Or, if you prefer, let me know if you want one or both of the files, and I'll email them to you.

This is intended to be used at the start of the course, so I tried to make it more conceptual than technical. There are a few formulas, but you are allowed to ignore them if you want to.

The results are pretty good, exept that when I converted it to PDF, the text quality seems to have gone down. I plan to keep the document in this form until I get some student feedback because it is much easier to work in PowerPoint. Eventually, when I feel I've gotten enough feedback, I'll convert it to a Word document, which should have a little nicer appearance. Of course, if you want to send me feedback, it will be appreciated.

John
