Promoting Online Teaching & Learning Activity

This activity is intended to have dual purpose.  One is an assignment for the marketing class to be taught as a practicum course for this program.   The other is to promote the Certification in Online Teaching and Learning.   With the diversity of the students and the various experienced instructors in this cohort, it is very possible that these results could provide valuable information to the department to promote the Certification in Online Teaching.  (If our instructor desires to use them)

In addition to the dual purpose, students are to have fun brainstorming, perceiving the future and participating in the process. . . so let's get started :)

Promotions

There are various methods used to promote products.  Before developing a promotional campaign research is required.   Some of the common steps for marketing research are:

1.Define the goal for the research.  For example is there a potential market for a new product; rate a current product; or customer service satisfaction. . .

2.Develop a plan to collect the information.  This could be in form of telephone inquiries, personal interviews, mail or online surveys.

3.Implement the research plan.

4.Analyze and interpret the findings.

For this activity the goal of the research will be to gather information to promote (create interest, build awareness, stimulate demand) online teaching and learning in the form of a survey.    NMSU will be considered the client for this activity.  The implementation of the survey and analyzing the results will not be completed in this assignment.

Learning Goals

Students will understand and apply the concepts and elements of marketing.

Students will collaborate and interact in groups to discuss marketing elements.

Assignment

1.Research the NMSU College of Extended Learning, in particular the Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning Division to gather information necessary to develop the survey.

v     A website link is:   http://extended.nmsu.edu/academics/otl/index.html

v     The necessary information includes:

Ø      Who are the actual customers for this program? (The target market) It is possible for there to be more than one target market.  Due to time constraints, select one target market and develop the survey for it.  Clearly state the target market.

Ø      Marketing Mix.

o       What product and/or support service is offered?

o       Is there easy access to product/service?

o       What is the price?

o       What type of promotion is currently used?

2.   Research three competitors and compare the information.   Prepare a table comparing the target market and the marketing mix of each competitor and NMSU.

3.  Determine which of the marketing philosophies would best promote online teaching and learning for NMSU.

4.  Develop a survey according to marketing philosophy selected.  The survey should consist of eight to 10 questions.  For instance the Marketing Concept would have questions regarding what the consumer wants/needs to be able to teach and learn online.  The Product Concept would have questions the regarding the scale of quality of the produce etc.
