Activity idea: The collaborative task is based on an activity I've used in f2f classes and workshops. I would need three or four participants who would play the role of a consultant team. I would play several roles: client, manager, and factiltator. The team has a single objective: find an acceptable solution to the presented problem.
It is very important that the participants have no prior knowledge of the situation or its solution. Otherwise, the task becomes one of recall, rather than critical thinking, and is not the sort of thing that requires collaboration. The scenario I plan to use involves the pilferage of teddy bears from a hospital. I use this case with freshman engineers because although solving the problem involves the kinds of thinking engineers need to do, this case does not require students to have any engineering knowledge. If you want to participate in this activity, please indicate whether or not you are familiar with this case. If I get enough people for the activity, but some know of this case, I'll pick another one.
