If you have never attended an event in Centra, then you will need to go through a few steps to get set up. Once you are set up, you should be ready for any future events that use Centra.
Go to the NMSU Centra Checklist to prepare your computer and yourself for a Centra event.
If you have gone through the setup, then you should start attending the event about 15 minutes prior to it's start time. If you have not gone through setup, you can follow the below steps, but you may need up to an hour of prep time.
Go to http://eplace.nmsu.edu
Add your Username and Password that you received in an email from centra@nmsu.edu and select Log In (If you can't find it, contact Julia)
Make sure you are in the tab for Upcoming events
Find your event with OTLC2 and the appropriate date in the title
Select Attend
At this point, if you did not prep your system or did not disable your pop-up blockers, you could get stuck, so make sure those pop-up blockers are disabled.
Your Audio Wizard may pop up. Make sure to select the appropriate settings.
You should see the Centra Event, live and in action
Prior to the event leader starting the event, you have access to your microphone feature. You can hold down the ctrl key (pc) or the option key (mac) and speak to whoever is in the room.
You also have a Text Chat feature up in the icon menu bar. If you click on it, a chat window pops up allowing you to chat with event participants.
The most common problems that occur when attending a Centra event are:
Getting into the event
- Disable your pop-up blockers
- You may not have an updated version of Java
- You may need to do a direct download of Centra. To do this, log in, and on the left, select Downloads. The appropriate download link should be there for you.
Sound problems
Check your headset cables, check the headset sound dial if it has one
Go to Tools > Audio Wizard and make sure your settings are correct. Select Advanced at the lower left to check your computer's sound settings.
If you are running Skype at the same time, you could have sound problems. You'll need to shut down both Skype and Centra and restart your computer and login only to Centra.
Lag and distortion
Exit out and re-enter the event
Check your green Internet connection indicator lights on the lower right. If they are yellow, you're connection is not doing well
If you can't resolve your technology problems, contact Julia. Start by sending Julia a phone text that you are having a problem. Then give her a call. She may be troubleshooting with someone else so she might have to get back to you.
