The resolution of the images produced by PowerPoint with the "save as" option is somewhat unsatisfactory. Text and equations appear "grainy". I used an older version of PowerPoint (2002) and need to find out if image quality can be improved using a newer version of the program.

Name of content creation tool: Animoto and Screencast-o-Matic
Link to tool: Animoto is at http://animoto.com/ and Screencast-o-Matic is at http://screencast-o-matic.com/
Content creation idea: I have created a short video in Animoto containing images connected to navigation. This video will serve as an introduction to a lesson on navigation for my Mathematics Appreciation class. My current plan is to use Screencast-o-Matic realtime in my face-to-face class while presenting the Animoto video and a Power Point slide show so that I can record student questions. This could then potentiallly be used for a hybrid or on-line class.

BEFORE: The QM standards I will discuss in the context of this lesson are IV.2, IV.3, IV.4, IV.5, and V.5. Section IV. in the QM rubric standards deals with resources and materials. IV.2 states, "Instructional materials are presented in a format appropriate to the online environment, and are easily accessible to and usable by the student." Screencast-o-Matic is freeware on the internet, and creates a video that can be uploaded into various accessible, online formats (see accessibility and usability below). Section IV.3 states, "The purpose of the course element (content, instructional methods, technologies, and course materials) is evident." The purpose of this lesson is to convey information to student on navigation. From the short introduction created in Animoto, and through the entire Power Point presentation captured in Screencast-o-Matic, along with explanatory narrative supplied by myself, the purpose should be clear. Section IV.4 states, "The instructional materials...are consistent in organization." The short clip produced in Animoto is a visual treat to prepare the students for the lesson and is consistent with the material presented in the PowerPoint section of the screencast. Section IV.5 states, "All resources and materials used in the online course are appropriately cited." I have given the URL for both Animoto and Screencast-o-Matic and have cited the online resources used in the Power Point presentation on the final slide(s). Section V.5 states, "The course (lesson) design prompts the instructor to be present, active, and engaged with the students." My plan is to use Screencast-o-Matic "real time" with my face-to-face class to capture not only my explanations of the PowerPoint section of the lesson, but to also capture questions from the students.
Accessibility and Usability considerations:
BEFORE: This from the May 29, 2007 issue of TechCrunch http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/05/29/screencast-o-matic-brings-screencasts-to-a-web-browser/, a weblog dedicated to obsessively profiling and reviewing new Internet products and companies.
"Screencast-o-Matic records audio and screen activity through the use of a Java applet. The result can then be displayed on the site or exported to Quicktime. There are various screencast software applications, both free and paid that deliver similar functionality, however Screencast-o-Matic is the first I’ve seen that is strictly browser based and by nature works across various platforms." I believe this is high praise for the accessibility and usability of this freeware. Most students will be able to open the Java applet created and view the created podcast.
Ethical Considerations:
BEFORE: Since this created lesson could be posted to a public portion of the World-Wide Web, it will be important to watch for copyright infringement on the material captured by both Animoto and Screecast-o-Matic. I have attempted to ensure the images I've imported are all public domain, and have only used recorded sound supplied by Animoto for that section of the lesson. The sources for the textual material are all cited at the end of the Power Point portion of the lesson.

Link to tool: http://www.viddler.com and http://www.screencast-o-matic.com
Content creation idea: I have experimented with various tools and created some content via two of them. Neither is even near perfection. Both are "rough drafts" due to time, and the fact I don't have an actual course to place the content within.
However, I work in the First Year Scholars program, and have consistently used the advising job as a place to develop content relevant to educating first time freshmen about key skills and knowledge base to increase potential success. The videos I have posted here are experimentations with methods of delivery of some of this key information. Thanks for checking it out. Remember - ROUGH drafts. :)

The Screencast addresses QM VII, Tech Support. NMSU students can only become self-directed learners (one of my course objectives), if they know how to use Banner Self-Service to meet their needs. The video offers a brief tutorial on how to look up classes and register for them via the online Course Schedule.
The Viddler addresses QM II, Learning Objectives. The video offers an overview of the First Year Scholars program, and describes five key features of the program.
Accessibility and Usability considerations:
Apparently both viddler and screencast are largely accessible to most bandwidths. Students have access to computers all over campus, and I offer the tutorials in my office f2f for those who request or need it.
Ethical Considerations:
Ethically, we should offer education in every conceivable form in order to reach the most learners. Online tutorials such as the ones I have created offer but one additional format to those existing already.

This tool aligns with the QM Rubric VI.1; tools and media support the learning objectives of the course and are integrated with texts and lesson assignments. By viewing the presentation, the student will get a review of the tools that we will be using through out the course. It also allows for interaction between the student and instructor.
Accessibility and Usability considerations:
Screencast is very user friendly and free, there are explicit instructions on how to create and upload the presentations. There is also a FAQ section which describes which platforms and browsers are supported as well as what is expectable content and what is not allowed.
Ethical Considerations:
Users must log in and use a password; the terms of service are very detailed. Copy write infringements are not allowed and if person suspects’ copies write problems, there is a place on the website to file a complaint. I did not see an age limit, however it is clearly stated in the TOS, materials may not be uploaded if it contains material harmful to minors.
Name of content creation tools: MS PowerPoint, MatLab, Windows Paint, MS Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.
Link to tool: NA
Content creation idea: Many years ago, I read a book by Hastings on curve fitting. Its format was to have teh top half of the page a figure and the bottom half text. I thought that was a nice way to present ideas. In thory, I could do something like this in MS Word, but it is much easier to manage figures in MS PowerPoint. I noticed MS Powerpoint has a mode in which you can show each slide on the top of the page and have text on the bottom, so I figured it was worth a try to make a document formatted like Hastings using MS PowerPoint. I used MatLab to simulate the queueing system and generate most of the plots. I used MS Paint to edit screen shots of MS Excel and insert them into PowerPoint. I had originally planned to use MatLab to simulate the queueing system, but then I decided to use the MS Excel version, instead, so that people are more likely to be able to use it. Because not all students have MatLab at the start of the class, I decided to use the MS Excel simulation in the course, as well. Finally, I converted the PowerPoint document to PDF using Adobe Acrobat Professional, reducing file size and enhancing access to people using screen readers.
I put everything you would need to know in one document. This is a lot for one setting and I recommend that if you are not familiar with this topic you read it in two or more sessions. In use, I would introduce part of this material in lectures or in Centra proir to releasing it to the students.

The document is an Adobe pdf, which means it is highly compatable with screen readers and accessible to all because the PDF reader program is free. The MS Excel simulation is accessable because virtually all my students have MS Excel. This spreadsheet is in MS Excel 2003, which can be opened and run in most available versions. Also, it uses no macros. The content is a key part of the Queueing Systems course and one that students often do not comprehend well at first. I feel that the discussion plus the simple simulation would help students better understand the concepts. I am using multiple modes of instruction and multiple modes of presentation to further improve understanding.
Accessibility and Usability considerations:
Briefly discuss.
The document is an Acrobat PDF file which is almost universally accessible. My original plan was to use MatLab for the simulation, but switched to MS Excel because some students will not have received MatLab or might not yet understand how to use MatLab. Virtually all my students, however, are familiar with MS Excel, so they can do the exercises in a more familiar environment. Later, I can introduce the more sophisticated MatLab simulation.
Ethical Considerations:
Briefly discuss.
Aside from providing access, I don't think there is an ethical problem. I wrote the MS Excel and MatLab programs myself, so there is not copyright issue in their production.

Screencast-o-Matic enriches instruction by providing students more in-depth informtion regarding the requirements of the assignment. The video provides information regarding the topic of the assignment.
Accessibility and Usability considerations:
Screencast-o-Matic is supported by most Browers. When one logs in for the first time, the software automatically checks the computer to verify the program will funtion on the computer. Once the recording has taken place a URL is provided to be shared with others to view the screencast.

I found this site to be very user friendly and best of all it is free. Of course if you want more than just a 30-second video you can puchase an unrestricted timed edition. For the free download, you can upload up to 15 pictures and select music they provide or you can upload your own music as long as you follow the copyright laws. As to accessibility issues for individuals with disabilities that information couldn't be found.
Ethical Considerations:
The Animoto site was specific in that any user must be 13 years old. The site is password protected and they have strict rules about copyright laws.
